Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
